Zoox A Step Closer To Market

Amazon has another stake in an electric vehicle company, in addition to Rivian. In 2020 Amazon paid $1.3 billion for Zoox, an EV self-driving taxi producer. Zoox is unique in the self-driving car world because they have built their taxi from the ground up, instead of retrofitting an existing vehicle with self-driving technology.

Over the weekend, a Zoox taxi operated on the roads of California, transporting employees between two campuses about a mile apart. These taxis don't have steering wheels or pedals, and there isn't a human driver onboard to take over if something goes wrong.

Zoox is one step closer to a commercial rollout of its technology, although the company doesn't give any public timelines. Self-driving technology has progressed more slowly than expected, so it is understandable that Zoox doesn't want to set any hard targets. The race is on between Tesla, GM, Google and Amazon to be the first to have full-scale, commercially viable self-driving capabilities.
