Google Appeals EU Fine

The big tech companies are the largest and most profitable businesses around at the moment. It means that they are easy targets for lawyers and regulators. If lawyers can get even the smallest allegation to stick, it could result in large and very public fines. Currently all of these companies are involved in numerous court cases around the world.

Last week Google was in court appealing a $5 billion fine from the EU for abusing its market dominance. A key part of the EU's case is that Google Search was the default search engine on Android powered smart phones simply because Google owns Android.

Google's response is that they are the market leader in search because they are the best, and it would be wrong to fine them simply for being better than everyone else. Good argument. To prove their point, Google submitted evidence that the most searched term on their competitor Bing, is "Google". Its like people queueing up at Burger King just to ask the server for directions to the nearest McDonald's. Enough said?
