Tesla Cybertruck

Last night Tesla launched their latest model, the Cybertruck. The vehicle is intended to take on the 'Bakkie' and SUV segments, two classes where Americans spend 'big bucks'. The Cybertruck looks like it belongs on Mars though. I'm not sure if I would drive one. Maybe I'm just too traditional?

On to the specs, the top of the range model will cost $69 900, can do 0-60 in less than 3 seconds and will have a range of over 500 miles (800 kilometres). This version will only start production in late 2022. The entry level model costs $39 900, can do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds, can only go 250 miles (400 kilometres) and will go into production in late 2021.

If you want to get your name on the waiting list, it will cost you $100. This is free money for Tesla - customers placing an order today will have their $100 sitting in the Tesla bank account for two to three years, not earning any interest. I'm sure that they could have made the deposit $1 000, and still have had people queuing!

As has become the norm at product launches, there has to be some fanfare. Showing what the Cybertruck could do, Elon Musk showed videos of it beating a 911 in a drag race and it winning a tug of war against a Ford F150. Then to show how strong the vehicle is, Musk had his chief of design hit it with a sledgehammer. Things went off script a bit when, in a demonstration of its near bulletproof specs, a metal ball was thrown at the windows. The window shattered. Tesla has three years to fix that glitch. All in all, it is another exciting product from Tesla, one that pushes the boundaries of traditional vehicles.
