What Is The Metaverse?

The real world is pretty rough right now, so let's delve into the Metaverse for a bit. According to Wikipedia, the Metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. Access to these virtual worlds will happen mostly through augmented reality headsets.

I am 35 years old and very happy with the real world, so maybe I'm not the right target market? But a 17-year-old living in a small flat in China with smoggy air and poor weather might have a different opinion. We shouldn't judge how others want to spend their time. I believe the Metaverse will grow as a place for people to interact and be entertained.

As investors, we need to determine who will develop and control the Metaverse and make money out of it. There may even be multiple virtual worlds you can access through different platforms. Meta (formerly Facebook) have put their hands up to take the lead here. They certainly have the social aspect covered and loads of cash to deploy. Mark Zuckerberg is convinced that their Metaverse is the future.

But there are other big contenders. Disney owns the most amazing fantasy library. I mean, what youngster wouldn't want to hang out with Princess Anna of Arendelle (below) in a virtual world? Gaming companies already have millions of loyal users who interact in their own fantasy online worlds.

All of our big tech company holdings will be involved in these developments, so we will watch on closely. I just hope we don't forget how wonderful the real world can be.
