Yesterday Business Insider released a piece titled The 6 most mind-blowing human health discoveries of 2021. One of those is a blood test that spots 50 types of cancer. This incredible product is developed by our very own Illumina.
Actually, it was developed by Grail which Illumina acquired last year. The deal went ahead without getting the nod from EU regulators. That is an ongoing saga for another day.
The Galleri test looks for DNA fragments in the blood that can signal the presence of cancer. It can even point to the location of a tumour. As we know, detecting cancer early improves chances of survival dramatically. This is a massive step towards early detection. I can only imagine insurers like Discovery would relish such a product and would happily pay for clients to get screened annually.
The success rate of the test needs to improve; it is still early days. Illumina disappointed last year as far as the share price is concerned. Let's hope 2022 shows some progress for the stock.
