Netflix Buys Roald Dahl Catalog

Netflix is in talks to buy the complete works of the late British novelist Roald Dahl. Usually, the streaming giant sticks to deals with big-name filmmakers and TV producers who deliver fresh content, so this announcement came as a surprise.

Dahl is the author of children's books including Matilda, The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to name just a few. His works have been translated into 63 languages and sold more than 300 million copies worldwide. Netflix aims to create animated series and movies based on these stories.

When Netflix started partnering with the managers of Dahl's estate three years ago, it was estimated that this catalog was worth anything between $500 million to $1 billion. Netflix is now available in 190 countries with over 209 million paying subscribers meaning that this content will not be short of eyeballs.
