Get To Know Robert Bradway

I said I would feature some lesser known CEO's of stocks we own. An important part of any investment decision is knowing that the company is in good leadership hands. One of the nice things about investing in a mature and sophisticated market like the US is that you can assume (not always of course) that the top dogs at big companies have to be super smart and hard working to get there.

Robert (Bob) Bradway is the Chairman and CEO of Amgen. Amgen now has a market cap of $144bn (R2.4 trillion) with 24 000 employees. It is a sizeable operation. Bradway actually comes from a banking background. He joined Morgan Stanley's healthcare investment banking business in 1985. He climbed the ladder at Morgan Stanley to become a managing director in 2001.

He joined Amgen in 2006 as vice president. He was CFO from 2007 to 2010 and then became COO until 2012. He has been the CEO and president since 2012. He has a bachelors degree in biology and went on all the way to qualifying as a medical doctor before joining the bank. He also holds an MBA from Harvard.

Over the years he has accumulated 127 000 Amgen shares worth $147 million. Not bad for the tender age of 57.
