Nike Teams Up With NYC

Nike has struck an interesting deal with the city of New York, to utilise their official logos on sporting and leisure apparel. This is the kind of innovative thinking that makes me happy to be a Nike shareholder. I love the city of New York, its my favourite place to visit.

The New York City Franchise and Concession Review Committee approved a two-year licensing agreement that gives Nike permission to brand their apparel with signature New York City iconography. In exchange, the city will get a 5% cut of relevant sales.

New York is a major tourist destination, attracting close to 70 million visitors every year. Shopping in the city is huge and NYC branded goods are always a good take-home gift.

Take a look at the picture below. Nike will sell lots of T-shirts with the obvious ones, like the default NYC, the NYPD, and the FDNY. The logo of the Staten Island Ferry and the Parks and recreation department might be for enthusiasts and collectors only. And what about the NYPD bomb squad logo?

Perhaps Nike should consider relocating its head office to New York City? It's currently in Portland, Oregon.
