The world of gaming is a gold mine that many companies around the globe are trying to tap. Streaming games looks like the next big thing. Google recently launched a cloud gaming service called Stadia which apparently has turned out to be a flop.
Based on existing infrastructure Microsoft seems to be the best placed to dominate this field. They have a large, sophisticated cloud business (Azure) and a very successful gaming division (Xbox).
This GAMERANT piece interviews the head of Microsoft cloud gaming. He talks about the team up with Sony for cloud gaming and streaming. Imagine Playstation and Xbox working together to stream games. That would be unstoppable. He also talks about their cloud services which are ready and waiting for scalable, pre-packaged gaming content.
Microsoft is a massive business and it is hard to move the needle. I get the feeling their gaming division will become large enough to be a big profit driver.
